These are either a bulb(s) or a circuit board problem in the exterior lights or a flasher problem. When the thing quits, get out and look at the lights to see if all are not working or just some of them. If all of them are not working you will most likely need a new flasher/hazard switch as they are in the same housing. If the rear lights quit only, it will be either the bulbs or the circuit board that holds them.

Will known problem. The hazard flasher also is the blinker for the turn signals. I replaced the hazard flasher switch and all worked correctly again. Gently remove screws above the speedometer and gently pry out plastic area to get to the flasher switch. I found detailed direction on line doing a search for "2001 Malibu turn signals don't work". or something like that.
