December 21, 2012 is just the ending of another thirteen year cycle on the Mayan calender. The reason it is believed to be the end of existence is because the Mayans didn't bother to record any more cycles after this. It's likely they just got bored, and figured they wouldn't be around in 2012, anyway.
The Ancient Chinese Book of Prophesies, used by fortune-tellers for all most 2 millenia, also ceases to list information after 2012.
I've made a living out of studying history for the past 30 years, and have done my best to study every aspect of every culture to the best of my ability with the resources I have. As an educated man, I'll tell you that I simply do not know. No one does. I've given you the reasons why theorists think this is the date in which the world ends, but it could simply be a coincidence.
The year 2012 is significant because it links the prophesies of many different cultures all over the world that never could have possibly had contact with each other, and I believe that this date was achieved by the study of the stars. Seeing as how no other year in history has held this significance, were I theorist, I would like to believe something will happen in 2012, as well, but I simply don't have an opinion.
If it ends, it ends, and there isn't anything I can do about it. If it doesn't, then that's great, and we'll just have to start talking about the next year that theorists believe the world will end.

Did the world end in 1999 as Nostradamus indicated or in 2000 as many modern charlatans said? 2012 is just the end of a Mayan calendar cycle, and it is ridiculous to say it means any more than 2000, 1900, 1000 or for that matter 2007 on the Gregorian calendar. This is Year 4705 on the Chinese calendar, and the Jews have their own calendar. Cycles have no real significance. If the Mayas were still flourishing, they would simply begin a new calendar cycle 12/22/12. It is that simple. There is no reason to believe that Mayans had any special knowledge. Some modern frauds just started this nonsense that gullible people want to believe.

This is a gross misinterpretation. Yes this is the end of a cycle in one of the many mayan calendars. They also state that this callendar has gone around a few times before so that this is not the first time it is ending.
The Maya indians did not like us belief in a single point in time as much as we do. The ending of the calendar is a 13 year process as is the starting of the new cycle so it started in 1999 and will continue until 2025 when we will have fully entered a new cycle.
We are in the middle of a wrapping up. A new cycle basically means new mix of ingredients which can react to eachother to produce various results.

Why are people worried about the Mayan Long Count Calendar? Consider the following:
1. The Mayans failed to predict their own demise through assimilation.
2. They were chipping away at stone, not computer generating their calendars. They stopped working on their calendar when they were overrun by enemies, plague or other natural disaster. Why read any prophetic event to the end of their calendar in 2012? That's just as far along as they got.
3. Last but not least, the Mayan people (like other people of history) were interested in what was going to happen to them, there and then, NOT to what was going to happen to an unknown people in the 21st. Century. Do I need to repeat that they failed to predict their own end? Why should they care about us in 2012?
Best.

No 12/21/2012 is when the Mayan calendar ends, and as far as I know, they never made any prophecies about the world ending. Even if they had, why would you consider a human sacrificing, stone age people as a good source of information?

I think it'll be just like the apocalyptic predictions that have been going on since the book of Revelations was first published. Every major event (outbreaks of war, stock market crashes, etc.etc.) has been touted as "this is it, the world is ending tomorrow!" by fanatics who interpret the prophecies that they believe to fit the current times. I don't believe the mayan calander is any more prophetic than the book of revelations....so in my humble opinion, life will go on as it always has.

Hmm.. I'm not sure. Everyone thought the world was going to end in the year 2000, but then again, ancient Aztecs didn't write that down..
To say the least, I'm living that year to the FULLEST.

after doing a bit of research and whatnot...i think that the world will not exactly end (as in big explosion death and destruction) i think that we will simply move on to a new level of existance...if youre really interested in this i highly recommend the book 2012:The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck
