Imagination, education, and determination.
Baby steps, baby! Rome wasn't built in a day. Pick something you'd like to change that you know you can do. Every success will improve your confidence and motivation. Once you have that one thing licked, then pick something else. So on and so forth.
Imagine it, learn how to do it, then set your mind to it. Spend a few minutes every day imagining you have already achieved your goal. For example, I want to get in better shape. I imagine that I'm already there. I try to see in my mind how much better I look, how much stronger I am, and how much more energy I have. I "see" myself admiring my well-toned body in the mirror. I "see" myself at the gym, enjoying my work-out.
I want more money, so I imagine myself earning it, doing what I love, writing. I can go through any phase of the process I want, from conception to the finished manuscript. Typing those two most sought-after words, "The End." I get that glorious acceptance letter from an agent who is eager to represent me. I see myself flying to NY to meet with editors, my agent, signing contracts, etc. I see my book in finished, published form, see myself at book signings, and finally topping the best-seller's list. Success!
The subconscious is a powerful tool. It cannot distinguish between reality and make-believe. Whatever you visualize, it will work to make a reality. The more details you put in, and the more "real" you picture what it is you want, the harder your subconscious will work. See it, feel it, live it. What do you see, do you smell anything? Are you hot, cold, comfortable? If you are in the sun, feel it's warmth.
Try it. If nothing else, it's a pleasant day-dream, but I believe it works! Good luck!

Better? Or improved?
To be a better person overall, try to be kinder, gentler, more compassionate, concerned with your environment, your neighbors, your family, your community.
Improved? Read things that will challenge your way of thinking. Learn a new word every day and practice it. Cook something exotic, see a documentary, go to the gym.
Good luck.

Very slowly with a great deal of determination, self-discipline, and work. Pick one thing at a time and do something every day to be better at it, like if it's to have more patience, come up with plans to respond to things that you would normally blow up at, learn to walk away until you are calm...., read self-improvement books, get back up and try again if you fail and never, ever give up....

Once a year I take a piece of paper and on one side I write all the things I'm proud of in myself, On the other side I write all the things I need to change. Then I pick ONE thing on the bad side and fix it.
Evolution, not Revolution...Small Steps make small mistakes.

You can start by changing the little things that you think need changing and just carry on from there. Know when to hold em and know when to fold em. Also, perseverance is a must, as well as determination and inner strength.
