It's long-standing tradition in the Republican Party to favor tax cuts, particularly those, such as lowered taxes on investment and other non-wage income, lowered or eliminated taxes on inheritances, etc, that favor the rich.
Specifically, there has been no Republican candidate yet for this election who has not largely endorsed making the Bush tax cuts permanent. They might vary on the idea of whether that's going far enough, but they do stand together on this.
This is a big problem in the current political climate. Back when the Republican Party actually stood for smaller government and, in particular, less spending, this was a defensible position. But as long as they continue to spend like crazy, this has some bad effects on the economy. One specific one has been the devaluation of the US dollar... it's fallen below the Canadian dollar, in fact, I think for the first time ever. From the world view, each dollar carries an inherent fraction of the mounting US debt, and thus, is ultimately not worth what it once was. Unfortunately, as long as the Republicans continue to run candidates who are socially conservative but fiscally radical, this isn't going to be fixed. Ron Paul is the only fiscal conservative running for the 2008 nomination.
Larger government and less income is a big problem, and we have yet to see the full effect of the course that Mr. Bush has been steering. This is debt that our grandchildren will still be paying. Without even commenting on the justification of the War, it should be clear to any honest person that you ought to pay for what you want to buy. As long as the war is the effective will of the American People, we need to pay for it, not saddle our children and grandchildren-yet-to-be with this debt. Right now, that's about $4,000 for every adult in the country, and it's expected to be $8,000 before the war is over. Everyone, whether Democrat or Republican, should be demanding their candidate pledge fiscal responsibility.. mortgaging our country to China is, ultimately, a much bigger problem than a few thousand bad guys in caves somewhere in the Middle East.

It depends on who you are talking to. Some want to reduce taxes, keep the Bush Tax cuts but maintain the IRS as it is. Others want to change the entire tax code by introducing a national sales tax and eliminating the income tax. See fairtax.org.

Think of it this way. Money is going to have to come from somewhere to fill the depleted Bush deficit. And if they continue warring other countries then there goes their stand on not raising taxes. War is not cheap.
