Mice can get in through very small areas. Much smaller than the mouse looks to fit. I would say from my battles with these critters, is they find an opening in the floor. Usually a water pipe hole. Electrical opening. Sometimes the do an aerial assault and come from the roof.
I first thing to remember about mice and rats is they like quiet places to set up house keeping. A nice clean and well organized house not provide good hiding places. Closets full of boxes or clothes make an ideal home.
Poisons work, but, should they die somewhere in or under a house the results are their last act of defiance and they really make a stink.
Traps are usually the best approach. Sticky traps work, but, it play on the emotions as we have to do something with the stuck mouse as it Squeaks helplessly in fear. I use the good old snap traps (Being careful not to get a finger or place where a child find). Set them along walls as mice not see well and travel the walls. You be surprised you really not need bait. I use a little peanut butter. After catching/killing the mouse I wash the trap to remove the kill smell as over time they will stay away from the trap.
But, as far as find a hole. Get a flashlight and crawl along the walls (ALL walls, this include under cabinets, where ever there a wall). look for holes from the size of a dime/nickle and bigger. You can poke some Steel Wool Scrubbing pads in the holes (S.O.S. pads without the soap, soaped may work, I just use plain). The pads they chew to get back through the hole they know and it rips them up inside killing them. With this you may have the same problem as with poisons and they die close.

Mice can crawl through the smallest of gaps in a skiting or floorboard. Scatter talc around the skirting and look for their trail the next morning. Any 'foot' prints coming into the room is where they are entering. Mice, like rats can spread diseases in a house, especially the kitchen.
There is no indication that you dislike mice. If you do, then a cat is the most efficient solution!

It has been my expierence with mice that the little bastards can get anywhere they want to go. And it don't take but a little heat to attract them let alone food or grapes..whatever your doing. I don't think they would climb the bed but I dam sure know they could. Get a few glue traps and put them in the corners if you are worried about it. Hell I got the dam things in the engine compartment of my car with material they got from my hockey eqipment in my barn over 70+ yards away. I only get a few in the house in the winter but they could be lining the walls for all I know.

This is the time of year that the mice try to get in for the winter. I have caught 2 this past week, keep traps set all the time. Use a piece of chocolate, it never fails.

Mice like to live in dark place and can get through the smallest of holes. If you have a gas fire then they might be living behind that, or under the stairs, In cupboards they can even climb stairs and up certain types of walls. They travel through roofs and lofts. Many people have mice and most of them don't even know it. Hope this helps.

i have had the same problem. first of all, do you live by a field, forest or do you have a large property? if you do chances are whichever direction the open field or whateverelse, start looking in those parts of the house where it faces those areas... they can get in through lots of places, dorways, airvents, faulty foundations and more. this may sound gross, but where ever there is LOTs of mice droppings, start your seach there to because you can find out WHY they are there... the times you find them the weather outside as well are clues as to why how and when they get in your house...
the site below gives some info on house mice and where you can find them living or getting in...

We keep getting mice in the house till had a new kitchen floor laid and we discovered we had a broken air brick vent. They had build a nest under our kitchen floor - they came out for dinner every night!! The talcum powder trick is a good idea and then set traps with bits of Mars Bars - don't laugh, they have a sweet tooth (works for rats too - but you need bigger traps!!)

It is nearly impossible to keep mice out of a house, invest in a few traps.

My cats bring live mice in all the time and let them go in the house so I wouldn't bother getting one. The talc idea is a good one if you don't mind hoovering it all up again.

They will start coming in for winter. You probably won't figure it out. They only need the smallest crack as under the door crack. Need to trap or poison as you know. The poison works with water. When they eat it , they need to go outside to drink and die. Trap , take them for a long ride.
