I can just say this: Harry Potter saved my sanity. This is literally true, a testimonial to the power of uplifting, positive fiction. I listened to the first four HP books on tape during a VERY long commute to a job that nearly killed me and also left me with a verifiable (but not verified) case of PTSD. The ONLY thing that kept me going after awhile was getting in the car at the beginning and end of every day and finding out what happened to Harry and his friends. I didn't pick the books up until 2001, but I am very happy that I did not avoid this phenomenon any longer than that (I knew before then that I'd have to read them, but the hype was so much that I stupidly avoided them for a long while-now I know better!)
As for the whole furor over Dumbledore being gay: when I heard this, it made absolute sense in context with the happenings in Deathly Hallows and it was completely believable. Rowling created a positive, even formidably powerful gay character without focusing on his sexuality. I ws more taken with how human Dumbledore was shown to be in the last book, how complex and how understandable. He is a great character, perhaps second only to my favorite since book one-Severus Snape!
I wasn't much of a fan of "Order of the Phoenix" compared with the other books, but I thought the movie was basically well done (although they butchered Cho Chang by condensing her with her friend Marietta Edgecombe). Eh, she was a necessary part of Harry's development, and I like Ginny Weasley a WHOLE lot better!

I love Harry Potter (the books over the movies of course) and I've read almost all the books twice. My favorite books are #7 and #5, and my favorite characters are Hermione and Dumbledore (the *real* Dumbledore as we know him from the books, not anything post-series!). I've seen the first four movies, but not the fifth yet, waiting for it to come out on DVD. The movies are fine, but I don't like imagining the actors as the real characters when reading the books. Actually before that, when I didn;'t know anything about HP and my friends told me to read it I refused, and the teacher even read the entire GOF to us as read-aloud but I didn't even listen to it!
HP all started for me 4 years ago when I found a copy of POA in the library, borrowed it and found it awesome! Since then I've become an HP fanatic.
Well, that's most about my HP life!
(Oh yes, Harry and Hermione would have been perfect! Sorry if you support H/G but I love the two of them)

I love harry potter.
The only thing I still don't quite understand is, why wait until after the series is over to announce that dumbledore is gay? Why not put it in the books and, while not going to any extremes, make it obvious it is that way? I always thought his childhood friend was an obsession (kids get that way sometimes) not a love affair...
And that's the only criticism I have of the series, I just wish to have known while the books were out, not when they are over!

I loved most of the books, and even if the 6th one wasn't that good, the whole story is still great! I can't stand watching the movies though. I understand that they needed to keep within a time limit, but they cut out too much of the plot for me to be able to enjoy them.
Who says I'm a muggle, eh?
