I was smoking 2-3 packs a day and quit cold turkey. My wife was smoking about 2 packs a day, she went on the patch and changed her daily routine.

Nicotine replacement is a medicine but it is really just more of what you have been smoking...so you can get the behavioral stuff out of the way first. These are the aspects that I had such a hard time with, the habits, the routines, the rituals of smoking. I had a great success with the divide and conquer approach.
It's a personal choice for everyone, and I'm sure these don't help everyone. The patch gave me nightmares and made my arm sore wearing it...horrible. The gum gives me hiccups but this has been a minor problem.
What really helped me the most is Commit Lozenges. I completely misuse (overused) them...a calculated risk to be sure and you would have to make that decision on your own. But my intention has been to make sure esp at first, that I would not give myself the chance to crave. I haven't smoked since January, breaking a 17 year heavy habit. I still use the lozenges about 10 a day at this point...I'm not worried as long as I stay away from smoking and I'm in no hurry to get off them but I have cut back from when I started using them.
Also find ways to deal with your stress...and get plenty of sleep. Be prepared for, you may just want to embrace the fact that you might gain some weight. If you can kick up your exercise and cut back on calories it might not be so bad...it's a double whammy (nicotine boosts metabolism, and food is a substitute for having cigarettes in your mouth.) so all I'm saying is don't be surprised.
There is a natural supplement called lobelia (asthmaweed) which is available in capsules. It is interesting because not only is it safe when used as directed...it mimics the effects of nicotine in the body. You can take them on a schedule, and an extra one if you get a craving.

As someone who has quit for 9 years, and then started up again I would tell you that stopping becaus ou need to is going to be much harder than stopping because you WANT to. You will need help. A friend of mine who lives in Chicago went and had a series f three shots. She got alittle sick but has been free from smoke for about a year now.
Good luck!

There's a book called "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking"
Look for it on Amazon.com. It gets very high ratings by most people. I used it a couple years ago and it worked and I didn't really want to quit smoking very badly.

After several half hearted attempts I gave in and paid a hynotist. I never in my life thought it would work but 6 years later I still don't smoke.

I actually went to one of those hoaky hypnosis seminars and it actually worked! The key to quitting smoking is that you have to want to quit...I mean REALLY want to quit. It isn't the addiction to nicotine that keeps you going back to them..it is the habit of reaching for them that will drive you crazy! Busy yourself...if you get the urge, distract yourself. Let your mind know that you are overriding the conditioning of reaching for the cigarettes. It truly is mind over matter.

i had tried quitting atleast 100 times before it finally worked. you really have to be disgusted by it. think about gasping for your breath when you get emphysema. it has to be a lifestyle change though. if its a half-hearted attempt- forget it. god i hate the way smokers smell now. thats what keeps me going.

Try homeopathic remedies. They work quite well. Wise choice makes a good one. Very inexpensive as well. No side effects either.
