As you have already seen, gold doesn't need cleaning.
The best one for silver is washing soda. Arm and Hammer is one brand name I've seen for it.
Put a sheet of aluminum foil on the bottom of a plastic bowl. Add warm water and dissolved washing soda. Leave the silver completely submerged for a while and it will clean itself. You will just need to wash it off and buff it a bit. It's a chemical reaction and it's amazing how well it works! And it's environmentally friendly!
All this and it's cheap!
Am I starting to sound like a tacky salesman?

Be careful not to use it in/on aluminum. You'll see why when you look for your aluminum foil when you're done. Instructions for this should be on the box.
Happy polishing!

Well, first, you NEVER need to clean gold... if it is REAL gold, it will NEVER tarnish.

I have used Wrights Silver Cleaner for over 20 years, and my Mom used it from back in the 1940's.

Here is a link to a number of silver cleaning products:

GOOD LUCK

Something for silver and really really cheap? Put some water in a bowl and add and dissolve some salt in it. Place a sheet of aluminum foil in the bowl. Dip your silverware into it.
