It was decide for me when I was a child, like most kids with nicknames like this. I go by a given nickname, Trey cause I'm the third. My dad goes by Bob or Little Bob and my grandfather goes by Mr. Bob.

My son was Robert Jason and the family calls him Jason. But when he went to grade school he had to use his first name. He then chose to be called Rob as he had an Uncle Bob.
