Pierre de Fredy, Baron de Coubertin (Jan. 1, 1836-Sep.2, 1937) was a French pedagogue (schoolmaster) and historian best known for founding the International Olympic Committee.
De Coubertin conceived of an international competition to promote athletics. Recognizing a growing international interest in the ancient Olympics, fed by recent archeological finds at Olympia, De Coubertin devised a plan to revive the Olympic Games.
De Coubertin remained Honorary President of the IOC until he died in 1937 in Geneva, Switzerland. He was buried in Lausanne (the seat of the IOC), although his heart was buried separately in a monument near the ruins of ancient Olympia.

Pierre de Frédy, Baron de Coubertin of France is considered to be the father of Modern Olympic games. he conceived of an international competition to promote athletics thus he proposed to revive the Olympics Games during an international congress on June 23, 1894 at Paris. He also established International Olympic Committee (IOC), where he became its first secretary-general. in this congress, they decided to hold the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, birthplace of Ancient Olympics and that it would be held every four years. they chose Greece because besides being the birthplace of Ancient Olympics, their interest of reviving the Games is at its strongest. So on April 06, 1896, the first Modern Olympic Games was held in Athens with a total of only 245 athletes representing 14 nations competing in 43 events.
