Run, don't walk, as fast as you can away from Poetry.com. It's the biggest scam site in the world.

Hello Dave,

This is undoubtedly a scam.

There are several warnings about Poetry.com on the Internet, including Wikipedia.

For more information about this please go to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetry.com

and;

http://www.eliteskills.com/writing_scams/poetry.com.scam.php

I am sure you will find these two sites very informative.

Incidentally the cost of this book of verse is $59.95 (£28.79) and you are extremely unlikely to see your poem included, if indeed you ever get the book.

My advise must be, if you ever receive an email from any site you do not know asking for money always conduct a Search Engine search first using the organization name followed by 'scam'.

Invariably you will get information either confirming that it is a scam, or otherwise. Well over 90% of the answers will say it's a scam.

My other advise is keep your pennies in your pocket

The best one is when they invite you to come over to their main yearly award give aways. Then they ask you to pay hundreds for your own trophy. Accommodation costs and airfares you have to pay for as well etc. It seems everyone is always a winner with them if you pay for the prize yourself.

Every time you write them a poem it becomes an editors choice and they want you to consider buying one of their analogy volumes that they publish your poem in.
They're just a moneymaking organization that survives from sales to their writers.

When they first started they used to send out free medallions but now you pay for all your own awards. They rely on the gullibility and vanity of people.
You don’t have to buy any awards and you can just do it for fun so there’s no real harm done there.

I had to send a reeeeeeally bad poem to Poetry.com before I managed to write one so bad that they wrote me a rejection slip.

They're scammers. Period. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun with them. Here's how:

Write the rankest garbage you can. Join with your friends in this, racing to see who can collect the most rejection slips, or the first. It won't be an easy contest to win.

I finally won my office contest with a piece called "I, Rutting Pig"--and that was on a fluke: they'd accepted it for publication once before (in another wing of the building, probably; same mailing address, different 'poetry contest').

I kept that rejection slip, not least because of the language:

"Your poem is rejected because of it's content." [sic]

Hello,

An award is an award you don`t have to pay for it. It is that simple. So it is a scam.
I would like to see your poem, as anyone else here, to see if you really are that good.

Advice: Don`t participate in contests that are held online.

Bye.

I had a message form micro soft telling me I had won a million quid! I checked out the email address and sadly it was a scam. there is a web site you can look up thees people to check them out. Never send money, give details or anything at all about you. Thees people are looking for details to rob you blind.

Yup that's how they get your money. They tell you they'll put your seminars writings in print and even invite you to the seminars but of course you have to pay to get there and to ge books. Some contests are legit, just feild them out before you enter them.

its more than likely a scam. my mam has won a fair few poety awards and has never had to pay for any of them. doesnt it kinda defeat the purpose of winning an award if you have to pay for it yourself?!
