This is a difficult question to answer as there are 2 sides to the answer. If a sighting is kept quiet people in that area will be unaware of it and therefore will not be on the look out for her. On the other hand as the questioner rightly states the abductor will try to hide the child from public view. The best way would be to use the helpline but people in Morocco may not be aware of this or even the number. I think the McCanns are doing the right thing by using private investigators who I would imagine are working hand in hand with all the police concerned. Lets hope they are successfull.

All investigations get scaled down. This investigation is no different. There is less than 6 officers in Portugal on this case now. That is no different than any other case in the UK. As for sightings, there will be sightings for years to come unless the police get a lucky break and it has been too long now.
Like everyone else I would like closure on this tragedy and a happy ending.

The reason that it is broadcast as to sightings is to alert other people in the area so they will be on the look out for the child and the alleged abductor. By people reporting it, it assists the police in their being able to locate the person responsible. The more eyes and ears the police have available, the better the likelihood the child will be returned unharmed.

The private investigators working on the case would not reveal facts about the case to the public because it would minimize their chances of finding Madeleine alive. The McCanns would also have been advised not to leak information. So the leaks if they are a fact may have come from another quarter ,but where ? .Is this info coming from the press ? Who knows ?Or is the source closer to home ? It should always have been a private investigation. But why all of a sudden has it been made known ?

With things like this people want to know everything about the case without getting involved.. Sometime it is a scare tactic towards the abductor hoping that someone will see that person and child.. Sometimes it is a reminder to people to keep an eye out for the missing person.. You can never tell with this sort of thing..

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY, FAITH!
I wonder if this may be part of the reason the McCanns hired their own invesitagors, because they knew from past history, how the Portugal Police **** things up. (pardon my French)
The article I read last night even included a description of the girls clothing and said her hair was cut. If this woman was so she had discovered Maddie, why not scream, yell, make a scene and get the woman detained. I know that is what I woudl do. The woman probably would of run off and left Maddie there.
For that reason, I think this may be a hoax.

I totally agree. If that woman has Madeleine, she won't take her outside again. The private investigation should remain private, because there is more chance of her being found. I pray that it will be soon, and that she will be home in time for Christmas.

isn't it more detrimental to tell everyone about a sighting before its investigated?
would it not make the possible child and 'abductor' move and hide??
okay the media report ot but someone has to TELL them first, so who exactly is telling everyone about these possible sightings before they can be properly looked in to.

First of all, I think they should find the source of all the media leaks and put a stop to them.
If the poor girl is found and then a case goes to court, it will be a hard job proving anyones guilt because all the evidence is tainted.

Newspapers are primarily interested in making money by selling newspapers, and so you'll never stop these things being reported I'm afraid.
