Some to get answers & opinions. Some just to get responses. Some to show others how smart they are. Some to just get points. Some think they teach. And some think they learn. Why do you ask?

I ask a lot of questions, but I answer about 20% more. Why do I ask?

1. I don't care about racking up points.
2. I want to know all the details. I am the first to sound like a dork and ask, "I don't understand" something even if to downplay my own ego. It doesn't matter that one doesn't know. At least I asked and found out--is my attitude. Some people think that by asking questions, it admits your novice, immature, or unknowing status. Some people never ask and I wonder why they don't ask any questions.
3. I can confidently admit I know a lot and in varied fields and I am making connections via my own research and readings (for interest, not profession). When I ask here, I want to know what others think. I am less individualistic, more collaborative in nature and "let's learn together" is my attitude.
4. I know a good deal and have my own opinions before asking, but I want to see what others think.
5. This place is the place to ask questions.
6. I can go ahead and read research (and I do) by pulling up databases, but it's more fun to get some ideas for the more trivial or personal types of questions.
7. The questions I ask aren't researchable or researched. It crosses two more more fields of social sciences usually or are personal in nature.
8. All I seek sometimes are opinions and insights.
9. I perceive this place to be somewhat neutral and at times friendly.
10. It's a pasttime and way to continue writing and keep thoughts flowing.

***BTW---if one thinks questions = what children do, this is one of worser kind of ignorance next to denial.

Nice to receive a lot of answers to choose the best from!!

Well, that could well be one of the several reasons why people ask many questions. Some may sincerely believe that this is the right source for knowledge!! Some others may just be testing out how much others know or what their opinion is.

It takes all kinds to make this world, isn't it?

I think it's because people feel they don't know enough about some subject, some person, some field or because they are questing on the topic of life itself...
If you ever had a toddler in your house, you would know that one of the first (and sometimes irritating) questions the toddler will ask, often over and over, is "Why?" In fact that question comes up a lot again when the child is in the teen years.
And all these questions of "Why?" by children, friends, family, co-workers or even strangers make US think about why... and we also become curious as to what the answer may be. So we ask some questions if we have enough self-esteem to do so. We still want knowledge, and questions are the way to edge closer to it. So I still ask "Why?" myself, and I think you do, too. Your question here certainly makes it appear that way to me! ;-}

Good question!

I will treat this as a philosophical question since you place it in the Philosophy Section and for me it does make a good sense. Many of us aks so many questions simply because we doubt. Particularly we doubt one's cherished beliefs, ones' dogmas and one's axioms.

It is a good point for a man since this is a starting point to philosophy. Philosophy begins when a person learns to doubt. Who knows how these cherished beliefs, dogmas and axioms became certainties with us and wether secret wish did not furtively beget them clothing desire in the dress of thought.

As Bacon said: Seek ye first the good things in the mind and the rest will either be supplied or its loss will not be felt. Truth will not make us rich, but it will make us free.

Thanks for asking. Have a great day!

It's natural curiosity.
Also, it's way easier than doing it all by yourself without even knowing.
