My boyfriend is the sweetest and most genuine guy ever, but he has problems forming friendships. He is very introverted and will not open up unless he knows someone for quite a while. Because of this, he has hated the last couple of jobs he's had, because nobody talks to him. He says he feels false and uncomfortable making small talk with colleagues. Having said that, the people in his current job haven't made any effort to make him feel welcome, and I think this has gotten to him.

He is really beating himself up about it recently and he is worried that he'll hate every new job because he won't make any friends there or because they won't like him. He also feels stupid because he's 36 and feels that he sounds like a 16 year old worrying about having no friends.

How can I help him have more confidence or help him feel better?

just be there listen to him and try to do your best to encourage (dont just tell him to talk to someone) his talking and if he makes any attempts praise him he'll come out of it with some good encouragement and help
