You need to contact agents who will submit your manuscript to the prospective publishers and if they are successful, your book will get published. You will get some advance and royalities etc. You can also self-publish by paying for it and promote the book yourself.

If I were you I would invest in a couple of books... The Writer's Market (most current copy you can find)...and, more importantly I think, a book that lists agents in at least one section of the book. I have one titled "Book Publishers, Editors and Agents" and it is agents I look at.
Agents know the publishing game inside out, and they are up to date on all the editors and publishing houses, as far as what they want now. An agent will know where and how to send your work (including if it needs an editor first), and agents do not require much money to start working for you... in fact many don't require any to start. They will take a percentage after publication. For you to know and judge and choose an agent on those grounds, you will need a book. The books are just a big help all the way around for a new writer!
That's my suggestion! Good luck...
EDIT: sorry to person above me, but I would not self-publish; books put out that way usually do not attract much attention. There may be a couple of exceptions, but the bulk remain in your house to be handed out to a few friends and family.

The first step should be to finish the book then do the re-writes. ("Writing is re-writing.") Once you have that, send out 'partials' and an outline to appropriate publishers and to any literary agents you can track down an address for.
Partials are simply the first two or three chapters of the book, plus a synopsis of the story.
Some people have sold books simply based on a synopsis and a few chapters: the author of 'The Horse Whisperer' got a huge advance for that book, and on top of that, the screen rights were sold for millions even before he finished writing it. It was his first book.
A pretty good one, too.

I suggest you go to my profile and check the starred questions there. I have starred every good Q and A on publishing and writing with answers from authors and people who know. You have been given some information here from people who do not know how it works. Sorry but you NEVER open a book, get the publisher information and send an unsolicited manuscript. Not unless you want to feed someone's paper shredder.

If you open up any book, you will see the publisher information on the back of usually the title page. What you need to do is make transcripts up of your book, and send them to the publishing companies. Do mulitples as it can take weeks for them to get back to you. Select the one that will pay you the most for your work!

You need a publishing agent,,,,,if your book is good, it will have a chance....without an agent, you can be a potential Pulitzer, however, no editorial would even read the first three pages.....(beware, agents are greedy buzzards most of the times....read the small print first)
