The fact that it's completely and utterly illogical.
Think about it, a world where doctors make the same living as garbage men. There's no incentive for people to learn and hone skills if they think they'll do no better at life than someone who's half as smart as them.
And if there's no competition among corporations, there's no incentive to create a better product to try to outsell your rivals, and you wouldn't have your precious iPod or Google, or even computers for that matter.

While others before me have hinted at the answer, the truth is that the cultural, social, and linguistic elements that make Americans Americans reinforce an individualistic culture. For example, the word "I" is always capitalized no matter where in a sentence--like "He decided that I would cook." As such, the individual is given more importance than the group. Socialism, by its very structure, works for a collectivist culture--one that values the social group over and above the individual; however, Americans are about as individualistic as possible when it comes the cultural expression. Thus, socialism and Americans just don't mix.

What do you mean by socialism. Bush did not hate socialism when he wanted British solders, who's nation had voted in a a socialist government, to die for the very right wing American government (democratically elected?)

Socialism is for the purpose of the redistribution of wealth, in order to help those who are less well-off than others. This alone does not anger so many people as does the choice by Congress as to who is defined as "less well-off," "better-off," and for what purposes.
On principle, it is anti-Capitalistic and history teaches most of us that that is how wealth is created. To take from the creators to give to those who cannot create should be left to the charities, but that is not seen as being so bad as giving to those who's "needs" are only perceived by the Washington elite.
Americans ask: "What right do you have to take from me to give to them? If I want 'them' to have what is mine, I will give to them."
Before the income tax, the per capita level of giving to charities was higher than at any time in history, except perhaps recently with Katrina and the tsunamis.

Get rich quick schemes in the capitalist business world, (buyouts, IPOs, conglomerates, acquisitions, mergers, and the stock market), do not actually work. Remaining solvent does not actually exist within false economics capitalism.

Profit existing in the capitalist business world, or millionaires existing within capitalism, is pathological deception committed by the 21 organizations spying on the population with plain clothes agents, (with covert fake names and fake backgrounds).

Actual economics is the persons paying the monthly business loan payments of companies voting at work in order to control the property they are paying for.

Capitalism is the psychology of imaginary parents, false economics, and the criminal deception of employees that are paying the bills (including the stocks and bonds, or shares) of companies.

Anti-democracy republicanism is the psychology of imaginary parents, and false government.

Perhaps it is the Communist values that upsets them. Communism is a closed system, with hardly anything human, though some people wishes to call it the highest humanism.

I believe that at the root of American people's opposition to socialism is their love for individualism and freedom of individual....... right at the base level, they want to become and be rich, and they believe that in socialism, nobody is allowed to become or remain rich.
