I was having an argument with a friend who says you can dress real casual and i was like you have to be in formal- dinner jacket specifically. So what is it? or does it depend on the person?

I generally dress formally for the opera, unless it's some kind of pop opera. Even at that, I'll dress nicely. For the theatre, it really depends upon the show. If it's avant-garde or experimental theatre, you might stand out if you dress too formally. Find out about the content of the show about in advance and dress accordingly.

It depends on the event. If it is a special theater or opera event with some celebrities that will attend to you should be definitely dressed official. Otherwise I think casual wear is good option - no dinner jacket is required.

You have to look classy, for a guy, he must wear a nice suit, Armani makes beautiful suits but they are expensive, but that'd be the best bet. To dress casual to a formal function will make you feel dumb.

If you find Opera boring, you still have to look good, if you wear sneakers you'll look like a putz. Must wear leather shoes which are shined perfectly.

Dress formal. You don't want to stand out in casual.

Both of you are right. Who judges what you wear at the theater or opera. It's up to you really. Depends on the style of the person.

it does really depend on the person and their means.

dress nicely by all means, but should you not have the tuxedo handy, go in whatever is available, say a dark suit.

that's unless say, it's specifically black-tie, like say your dad is throwing some kind of benefit to cure small kids of debilitating diseases, then tuxedo is the way to go

but if you're unsure, ask your date/whoever you're going with and use her as a cue to how you should dress.

What is the show depicting? Base it on that. I think casual is not the way to go... The question should be how formal (preppy vs suit vs black tie?).

Suit and tie all the way. If you want to go a little more casual, just skip on the tie, but definitely don't forget the suit.

it really depends on the theatre or opera that you are watching.usually they will write it down on the invitation/tickets...you can also call them and ask.you do not want to be caught under or even overly dressed...trust me...
good luck though...
