I have a glass tank that is 75cm/2.5ft long by 35cm/1.1ft wide by 50cm/1.6ft high.

We had tropical fish in there but they got sick and aren't there any longer... Well at the moment it's just sitting there.

I'd really like to get a turtle. Is my tank an alright size?

I have a filter and a heater at the moment. I'll need a light as well, is that right?

Is there anything else I need to know? Thanks heaps

They are allowed in NZ. It's a large glass aquarium.

Dear Sarah,

I kept turtles in a fish tank, when I was in high school. The biggest problem I encountered was providing them with a dry area. The raft, I kept in the tank, always seemed to get wet.

I think the following website may answer your other questions:

It was prepared by a young woman, about your age.

First check up whether in your country people are allowed to keep turtles as pet. In many countries it is banned.

Again, turtles are amphibians and need some land area with sand for roaming. Keeping turtles in empty fish tank may not be a good idea as such.

So it's a saltwater tank then? Is this a saltwater turtle? Well it won't matter anyway, the turlte will have a land part in the tank. All I can tell you, is my friend had a pet turtle and it stunk. Do you really want a smelly room? People might think it's you...
