The transformation changes energy from one form to another. Often some of the energy is given off as heat, so the transformation is not 100% efficient. Not all of the first kind of energy is changed into the second kind.

For instance, using electricity to get light from a light bulb is not 100% efficient. Some of the energy escapes as heat. Not all of the electricity is changed into light.

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed. As energy runs through the ecosystem and is changed much of it is lost as heat. Life (cell) is the most efficient energy transformer since it effectively uses energy at a 38% rate. Cars on the other hand are grossly inefficient at about 10%. If we could get an automobile as efficient as a cell in utilizing stored energy we could be getting 200 miles per gallon and won't have that much wasted energy on heating up the motor.
