I would like to know more about midwives.
What they do, ect.
And I'm also interested in learning more about *not sure of spelling* Lamaz (?) classes

Midwives do alot of the same things a regular ob doctor would do, but they usually spend more time with you. The only thing they do not do is a C-section. For normal deliveries, they are generally more helpful than the ob doc.

Lamaze classes teach you about the stages of labor and learning how to breathe through the pain. Also, when it is time to push and everything in between. Usually you will also watch a live birth during the class, so that you will know what to expect.

Good luck!

Midwives are different from OBs because they take a more natural approach to labor. They are usually with you throughout your labor (OBs tend to show up thirty minutes before you deliver). Midwives are more personal and will help you with alternative births like water birthing. Alot of women who do not want a lot of medical intervention with the birthing process prefer midwives as to OBs. However, if there is something wrong with you or your baby at the time of birth, midwives are not medically trained to intervene, you will have to have a doctor. Also, if you are a high risk pregnancy, it is a good idea to have an OB instead of a midwife. Hope that helps!

In Australia the midwives do ALL the work. When I had my son the doctor put his head through the door a few times ( I was in labour about 7 hours) asked how it was going and then moved on. The doctors are only present if there is an emergency. I was actually asked if I wouldn't mind having a student midwife helping with the birth. I agreed as they need to learn somehow. she did a terrific job and we actually stayed in contact for a few years as she was really please with her first birthing. We still see each other occasionally after 8 years.

My friend chose a midwife because they were more into natural ways of helping labor progress and she had a c-section with her first and wanted a vaginal birth with her second. I have a wonderful OB/GYN. I didn't go to Lamaze classes with my first and I probably won't go this time either. The labor and delivery nurses coached me and explained things to me when I was in labor.
