I do not think the Umpire should be allowed.
1. The umpire gets to sit and be comfortable in their chairs. They do not have to run back and forth. They do not have to hold their serves. They do not have to face the pressure of trying to break their opponents serves. They do not have to play the game.
2. Only a player knows what is going on in his or her mind. The Umpire cannot say a person is not trying hard enough. The person best that day may just not be enough. You don't know what is going on in a person mind or in their lives. You cannot make such a judgment.
3. When other players get bagelled or loose 6:1 or 6:2 I have never heard them get scolded. Amelie Mauresmo lost to Sharapova in the US Open semi's. She lost two of the sets 6:0. The Umpire did not say she not trying hard enough.
4. Sharapova lost to Ivanovic 6:2 6:1 in the Roland Garros Semi's and she did not get Fined for lack of trying.
5. I think there is more going on here than meets they eye. He is the only player on the tour right now being attacked and criticized like this. Other players have stepped forward and said they have been offered money to throw matches yet no one is investigating them. Just him why?

I viewed the whole incident differently. The umpire simply wanted to find out why he was serving so bad when the rest of his game appeared normal and then controversially (according to television commentaries) advised him. The umpire was just trying to save a game that was slipping into a fiasco (at least Davydenko improved after the horse had bolted) and perhaps save the ATP from more match fixing controversy. Obviously Davydenko is tired. The long season has taken its toll on him. He plays way far too much tennis and I think its becasue he goes for quantity rather than quality picking points here and there to remain relevant in the rankings. Federer on the other hand plays only the majors, masters and a few choice tourneys that he knows he will win comfortably with the quality a person like Davydenko does not have.
I think its the responsibility of the ATP to ensure the right balance between participation and points rather than vilify tired players who just want to make a living.

He shouldn't. Davydenko has had a hard time of late, with all the talk of match-fixing, and being fined for not trying. I thought it was obscurd that he was even fined. If a player's game is not there, who are the umpires to say they're not trying? It is ridiculous. When you include the Hingis accusations of cocaine at Wimbledon, Tennis is beginning to get a bad wrap, and someone needs to make some changes, so the sport doesn't lose it's appeal. Davydenko is a good player, and he doesn't deserve all the bad luck he's gotten lately.

I don't think that it was proper for the chair umpire to criticize Davydenko's game. I think the chair umpire must remember what he/she is there for...umpiring...and not voicing his opinion to the player especially during a match.
I think that if the umpire sees a potential problem during the match, he should report it after the match. The match could then be reviewed in its entirety by more than just one person, and then a decision could be made if a verbal warning or fine is appropriate to the situation.

It's a shame that umpires are allowed to criticize players. In tennis(and also NBA) these umpires think they can get away with anything and they actually do. Now, the players should be afraid of not only their opponents but also of the umpires. I think Nikolay's career is done, he can never be the same player again. It's going to be in his mind, I'm sure he will go winless in Tennis Masters cup. Tennis is such a mental game after all.

I wondered about that as well when the commentators said that the umpire made a comment about Davydenko's serve. I think it could have waited til after the match as well, but as the commentators also said Davydenko's been having a lot of problems with his elbow as of late.

sometimes we really seen players who are not really trying especially if we are very familiar with that particular player and we know his game, but like davydenko, he's the only one who really knows what is going on him.
