and 20 million of the children in that country work in conditions which can be likened to child slavery.

Shouldn't India be concentrating on cleaning up its own house before trying to impress the world with how techinologically advanced it thinks it is. Even if it is a developing nation it is not as if any of the money is filtering down to the majority poor is it?

So far, a superpower has been defined as a country that has a military nuclear capability, and the ability to use it as a threat or restraint on others.

If a country is going to join this club, it has to divert resources to achieve it. It is just a matter of deciding what ones sees as more important: welfare of the civilian population or military achievement. Poverty is no bar on being a superpower, and some might suggest it is the consequence of such ambitious expenditure.

There are plenty of people living in abject poverty in the present day super-power, the US of A. Think trailer trash and the army of beggers living on the streets of American cities and you see what I mean.

Having a democracy does not get rid of poverty. It certainly has not done so here in UK, nor in USA, France and India. At least in a democracy people can make a fuss about what they think of as a problem and try and get it sorted out.

In India right now, hundreds of thousands of landless peasants have marched on the capital to demand their rights to land, claiming their land has been stolen from them by major developers. So far the politicians have said nice words and the people have started the long march back home. Not sure if this will resolve anything, but hope so.

If people want to overcome any problem in a democracy, they have to fight for it and make a lot of noise about it.

Lets look at it like this, India is far better placed to become a world super-power than some of us might think. India has a middle class numbering some 200 million. Yep, I know, hard to believe but true. It's this massive 'middle class' in India which is the driving force as it is indeed in any other democracy. Let's just call them 'Middle India' and you get the picture - Middle America and Middle England.

It is this 'Middle' which decides the future and direction of a democracy.

Remember always that India is not merely the worlds largest democracy, India is the worlds Greatest Democracy.

INDIA, JEWEL IN THE CROWN.

If you read your history books, i think you will find that many "great" nations were born out of slavery and selected distribution of wealth.

Communism did nothing but reaffirm this fact. Capitalism is almost the duality of the same.

Poverty is not a restraint on being a Superpower. Just look at America and the Soviet Union, both have poor within their borders. No the only requirement is a Nuclear weapon and the will to dictate to a part if not all the world. Personally I do not think that the Indians would want to dictate to the world, they are much too sensible a race.

They're using their total power as the standard, rather than their power per person. That's what most people use.

They have about 1 billion citizens in India, of course theres bound to be millions who live in impoverished conditions. I'm not sure if they are going to be a major superpower because the only two superpowers in the future, that I see in my visions, are the mighty United States of American and China. A second Cold War but this one will be more intense because China will do almost anything to be on top and the US doesn't take lightly on threats.
