My mom grew up listening to disco, 80's, and Latin music.
I don't think she can relate to anything I listen to, but she does like some of the bands I like.
For example, she loves Coheed and Cambria. She's one of those obnoxious Co&Ca fans that believes their first album was their best, and cannot get herself to like any of the albums they released after their first. Just less obnoxious because she's my mom, you know?
She also LOVES Mudvayne's 'L.D. 50' album.
She's kind of weird.

My mom is pretty indifferent about music. She likes a song here and there, but otherwise, I don't know much about her musical interests. I guess she likes some sort of piano stuff. I don't believe it's classical music exactly, but I'm not sure.

My dad grew up on stuff like the Beatles, but he's an immigrant. Still, the Beatles were popular everywhere, so everyone knew them. He also had some Eagles and Fleetwood Mac here and there. Most of the soft rock and pop stuff. He still listens to those bands today. He also listened to all this Asian pop stuff. I can relate to the former stuff, but not the latter. Almost any type of pop unless it has rock mixed in makes me sick.

My parents liked the music of the 1940's and early 1950's, since that was popular at the time I was growing up. My father is dead, but he probably wouldn't much like the music I would be inclined to listen to today, which ranges from classical to oldies rock. My mom is not a big music listener and I'm not sure what she listens to these days.

My parents listened to a little bit of everything. They were mostly into big band type music. We had a lot of Perry Como and Andy Williams in the house but also had the Boston Pops and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. We also watched a lot of TV shows that featured the older country artists like Charlie Pride, Roy Clark, Roy Acuff, Loretta Lynn, that kind of stuff. I grew up in the early 70's listening to what was played on the local A.M. radio station which was a mix of late 50's, 60's and the stuff that was currently coming out, Eagles, Jackson Brown, Zeppelin music of that ilk. Then I discovered FM radio in the mid 70's and started to hear much more of the rock that I love. My parents would listen to it but were never thrilled by it. I remember asking for a rock album one year for my birthday and my mom bought me an Air Supply record. Not exactly what I wanted but she tried. They both did listen to some of the music I liked. Mom like Pink Floyd and you could catch dad tapping his fingers along with Lynyrd Skynyrd if it was on the radio in the car. I thank them for giving me the musical diversity that is my life today. I can still listen to and enjoy any and all the music that I have mentioned in this post and I think that I am much the better for it. Thanks for asking.
11/2/07: I guess I should have mentioned that both of my parents have left this life. But they would still listen to some of the stuff I like as I would their music.

Wow, grew up to The Doors, Hendrix, Lovin Spoonfuls, The Animals, Pink Floyd...Syd Barrett, 10 Years After, Grand Funk, The Who, The Guess Who, The Rolling Stones, Dug Dugs, Cream, Moody Blues, Led Zepplin, Carlos Santana, Beatles, Johnny Cash, The Byrds, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young when he joined, Bob Dylan, 3 Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Blue Oyster Cult, Elvis, Jim Stafford, Ray Price, Argent, Freddie Fender, and the list goes on and on. Great Question, you get a star. My father couldn't stand the tutti fruitti bubble gum music of today as he put it before he passed. My mom still listens to the classics I have and some from other folks who have answered this ????. She frowns at the music of today.

My dad grew up listening to classic (I mean really classic i.e. 40's 50' 60's) Country, Bluegrass, and Gospel. My Mom was a Concert Pianst with a degree in it. She grew up on Classical and Bluegrass. Anything You want to hear on a piano, She could play it. But to relate to the Prog and Metal that makes up 90% of what I am into...No Way. My dad thinks rock music is just all meaningless noise. He was one of those People in the 50's who thought Elvis was the worst thing that ever happened to music. Amd My Mom..well She's been gone for a long time. She never got to hear anything I like. She would have appreciated all the keyboard work, I think.

My parents were 60's teenagers, and as such {between them} grew up on :~

The Beatles ; Jimi Hendrix ; Buddy Holly ; The Drifters ;
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac ; Sam Cooke ; Pink Floyd ;
Mike Oldfield ; Van Morrison ; Fleetwood Mac ; The Kinks ;
The Beach Boys ; Lonnie Donegan ; Big Bands ; Elvis.
Basically the staples of the 50's, 60's & early 70's in the UK.

I grew up on {child of the 80's} all of these, and the music of the 80's.

I share my dad's love of Classic Rock, though I like a wider selection of it than he does ~ I had Led Zeppelin albums before he did!

My mum likes some of the music in my collection, such as :~

Eva Cassidy ; Van Morrison ; *early* Rolling Stones ; various songs by 1960's bands {my collection has a lot of single songs by many artists}.
She doesn't like World music {I have a lot}, as she always moans "I can't understand what they're singing" :(

Both of my parents listened to the bluegrass and gospel music that was prominent in the deep south. They also both were into Hank Williams. As they grew older and the times changed, my father gravitated to the late 50s-early 60s rock movement with a healthy dose of doo-wop. That later morphed into the Motown sounds and then to the outlaw country movement of the 70s around the time I was born.

Over the years, I shared their love of the Motown, outlaw country, and 60s soul classics (like Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding).

Neither of them care much at all for anything I listen to, and that's fine. We have enough common interests that it's never much of a topic for conversaton.

On a semi-related note, I walked into my son's bedroom a few days ago to find him singing "Surrender" by Cheap Trick. He's seven. I was one happy dad.

My Father is a huge Jazz fan, so I grew up listening to Count Basie,Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith and various others of that ilk. Just to turn the question around for a moment, I love Miles Davis and Jimmy Smith( if you haven't heard it, check out "The Cat"- an album Smith made with Lalo Schifrin...the coolest hammond sound mixed with Schifrin's bombastic orchestrations..."Theme From The Carpetbaggers" is awesome). My mother was a huge Stones fan, and I'm no different..." Exile On Main Street" is my favourite.
I listen to a lot of 60's/70's stuff( despite only being 33), and my father really likes stuff like "Fresh Garbage" by Spirit, and I played him "The Yes Album" the other day which he really liked...He can't deal with too much punk/avant-garde stuff, but there's a lot of stuff we both like, which is cool

Dad and Mom had the Beatles. I had Nirvana. I liked The Beatles growing up and my parents liked Nirvana too. I liked everything they listened to when I was growing up. They liked everything I listened to also. I'm the last generation of when rock was on top before all this pop/rap crap came out and has ruled the airwaves. Both my parents and I share this hatred for the mainstream TRL junk they have played for almost a better part of the decade.
