Can an employer ask if an immigrant is legal? is there a law against them doing this?

So do you think almost every employer who has illegal immigrants working for them knows they're illegal?

well, it's illegal to hire an illegal immigrant, so yes. they can do it subtly by asking to see greencard/worker's permit information

i think they need some kind of document proving who they are if the employer will be putting them on a "payroll"

No there is not. They have to have their SS card anyway and can ask for Their papers.

Yes, it is the same as asking if they are felons.
