I have been watching since October 26. I calculated the expansion rate of about 1300 miles per hour (radial expansion.) I am just guessing, but I think it probably was an impact on the comet from a rocky body. Its expansion is too slow for an explosion yet way too fast for just sublimation of sunbaked ice. If it took a hit from a small asteroid all the exposed ices would turn to gas and dust all at once and make just such an expansion.

Due to constant night time cloud cover, I've only had 2 nights to observe this comet.
The first night I only used a pair of 12x50 binos to find it then I took 50 or so images with my little Canon camera then stacked them.
The second night I set up the scope and imaged with my Gstar-Ex.
17p/Holmes is very low on my Northern horizon, and I'm looking between trees mostly.
But it is an extraordinary object. I look forward to the clouds clearing so I can see it again.
I'll send you the pics I took.

That is one odd looking comet! I went up on my roof to look for it last night and found it almost immediately. I couldn´t make out any tail at all. But it was blowing so hard me and my telescope almost flew off the roof. No chance of a proper observation there... If it isn´t completely cloudy it´s windy :(
-edit-
It´s low in the horizon for you? For me it´s right in zenith. Where are you to see it low in the horizon?

I'm curious as to which observatory this is. I've been imaging the comet with a 1m telescope the last few days.
