humans have 46 chromosomes, and chimpanzees have 48 if im not mistaking.. thats why scientist believe humans and chimpanzees have so much in common.

There are 46 chromosomes in a dividing human cell. The definition of a single chromosome is whatever is attached to one centromere. During the S phase of mitosis, DNA is synthesized and doubled-so there is double the amount of DNA, but it is all attached to one centromere-so therefore it is still one chromosome.
