The quality of play here is just too poor. We don't have electrifying superstars that make you hold your breath when they touch the ball. The other problem is that professionally, we don't have too many soccer only stadiums yet. It is painful to watch soccer, no matter how good of play it is, on a football field. I do believe the time will come, but it will take some electrifying star power and a team in most major cities. When fans have something at stake in the game (like the pride of their own city), then things will change. It will all come together when the dying generation of American meatheads lets go of their death grip on their sports pride.

I think that americans that don't like soccer and say it is boring probably never saw a good game to the fullest. Most soccer I watch in america is pretty boring. MLS doesn't have too many names to make the league exciting for the "american sports" fan. In the past, the only soccer showed here was the english, that used to be really boring too (not anymore, though). Definitively soccer has games with no excitement, just like basketball, football and baseball also have boring games and great games. But financially for the sponsors, soccer has a too long non-stop times (45 minutes), little time for advertising, less money. For the fans, soccer is about to get hooked in the game the whole time, so a bad game is not watched, but a good one is gonna have all the attention of the ones watching it, so also less time to eat and drink beer between plays, talking about everything but the game and specially less tailgating in the stadiums.
Also, americans don't like to cheer for stuff they are not good at..
But I guarantee that any american sports fan watch a good champions league game between good teams, or the spanish league (is not easily showed in the US), and even the english teams now, that are really creative and interesting these last seasons, I'm sure they wanna see why the whole world, but US, really can see the beauty of soccer (how dumb the whole rest of the world is...!!! typical).
I learned to like football, baseball and always loved NBA (and watch some hockey, that is the same concept as soccer!), but I like them all for different reasons, but at least I know how to read the gameplay and understand the logistics of each one, and for that still think soccer is more interesting for more reasons, it is more difficult and requires much more creativity than the other sports. Physically is the one that requires the combination of many more qualities than any american sport, and something that makes it so much harder that it is the hand-foot coordination, that americans have very poor, since all the americans sport are throws or hits, and are mostly done in a controlled environment.
It combines the creativity of basketball, without holding the ball while doing it; the tactics of american football, without starting from a static position and all players arranjed in correct positions; involve tackles, many in high speed and low blows; and the beauty of a quaterback throw done with the feet; the ability of avoid been hit, like a wide receiver stepping over the defenders; and the magic of a beatifull goal, that I don't need to explain...

I just got home from an MLS playoff game in Washington DC. It was anything but boring. The United were down 2-0 after the half and almost won with three goals in a ten minute period. Unfortunately, the last one was nullified after a questionable foul.
Washington is full of people from all around the world that appreciate the game and revel in its excitement. We have football, baseball, basketball and hockey in this city. The fans for those sports can't match the passion I saw at RFK Stadium tonight. The team's season is over because they were eliminated and the fans were singing and chanting as they went out to the parking lot just the same as if they had won.
People need tot go to a live game and then decide whether it is a boring sport or not.

I think that Soccer is a great sport. The problem is that America has never had a really competitive league or team while most Americans have grown up. I think that as MLS gets better and more and more kids have American Superstars to look up to and a league that plays on TV you will see the emergence of Soccer's popularity in America.

Personally, I don't like watching sports, I enjoy playing them. When I play sports, I don't like to just run around and only use my feet. So, that is why I don't particularly like soccer. Though I have played American football for a long time, I find it a bit too slow. Personally, I love rugby. It takes the speed of Soccer and the hits of football, and takes away the pads.
Also, culture has a big say in this too. In America, violence is very accepted, in some form or another. For us guys, its a sign of manliness: we are tough enough to play a game like football, where we thorugh ourselves at each other. Also, soccer isn't of our own invention, so that's another reason.

The comment earlier: "most americans don't like sports un less they cam up with it." is one of the dumbest things I've heard in quite awhile. We generally find soccer boring. Years ago, we in Pittsburgh had an indoor soccer team and I loved watching that (probably because it was similar in pace to hockey), but it never led me enjoy regular soccer. Too slow, too low scoring, too little contact, too much space between players. Besides, we've got enough problems without riots and hooligans.

You have to realize that, it all goes hand in hand with where we all are from.
Usually people who use "cm" and "kilos" in their metric system, tend to like Soccer or "Football" as they would call it. For instance, people from Europe and Latin America are so much into such sport, hence usually at the FIFA's World Cup, the winner is usually from such continents.
It's not that American girls don't like soccer, is just that it's not much part of their culture. You can't expect Christian people to start liking Hinduism. Same concept. Different places, different people, different mannerisms, different taste.
I'm sure there's a lot of American women who enjoy soccer, but mainly if their children are playing it! ;)

basket ball is so boring watching some lanky giants bouncing around jumping up and touching a ring and thinkyour cool or hard because you intercept a pass which happens all the time in soccer and the yeah man and give me 5 booo
baseball and american football i really do not know what you enjoy about these sports i fall asleep after a few mins
but you do not have a clue what you lot are missing.
football or soccer as you lot call it is played and loved all over the globe and is a amazing sport to watch and play.
if you lot in america sorted yourselfs out i really think you could become one of the top football nations over a short period of time.
my view like it or not, deal with it pal

Soccer is my favorite sport. I think most Americans don't like soccer because they didn't grow up with it or someone to cheer for. I don't see why they have to put down somebody else's favorite sport either. Everyone has different tastes and i think it's stupid trying to change that.
