A double room has 1 bed, usually double size, but can be Queen, King size whatever. It means you share the bed with another person. A twin room has 2 single beds or can be slightly larger. Reasons hotels etc specify this is because often it could be for example a Hen or Stag party and whilst single people perhaps don't mind sharing a room they often do not wish to share a bed. Trust this helps!

At a guess a double room will fit a double bed and a twin room only two singles, these may be bunk beds so therefore take up less floor space.

Well, I would have thought that twin rooms had space for twin beds (each 39" wide) and double rooms had space for double beds (each 54" wide), but what do I know.
