Hi. I've haven't been to my doctor in years (bad I know) and I've never been to a gyno. But my boyfriend and I are getting to the stage where we're (okay, I finally am, he's been waiting a while) are ready to have sex but I want to get birth control first. Who would I talk to? My doctor or would I need to see a gyno? Also, I don't particularly relish the idea of having to take a pill every day, especially not the same time every day because my schedule varies so much and I'm bound to forget a day. What would you consider to be the best type of birth control? Thanks a lot!

Just to clarify, I'm 23 and have been with my boyfriend for over 4 years. I'm just absolutely terrified of getting pregnant and we will still be using condoms.

Also, if I make an appointment with the gyno, will he be doing a papsmear? I've never had one done and don't particularly want to (at least until I've lost my virginity).

Last question, will the visit to the gyno/getting birth control show up on the insurance statement? I'm still on my parent's insurance (the joys of still being in college) and would prefer they don't know (very strict Asian/Catholic parents who would freak if they knew). If not, how costly does it get? (I could probably get away with the gyno exam w/out any serious questioning from my parents...hopefully)

You didn't state your age...
In some states if you're under 18 your physician is required to inform your parent(s) that you've been per scribed the pill. (or whichever contraceptive you've chosen).
Patches are available, also a type of contraceptive that's inserted just under the skin in whatever place on the body the Dr. thinks best.
Something new is a pill that is taken only certain times of "THE YEAR", it shortens the menses cycle time and gives you more control of "when"you have a period.
I would go to the gyno, he has a ton more information and would/could closely monitor any changes in your health.
Good Luck

I'd go to a gyno. Pick a women if you can, I find them more sympathetic and easier to talk to about sexual things.
Also, you might go get a stick test at the local clinic for Aids.

Take him with you and tell him that allot of couples do that now. Aids has such a long time before you exhibit symptoms it's really a good thing to do with a new lover. It sounds like you are not considering condoms and that is the best way not to get it. Even if he is a Prince of a guy, you don't know who his last Princesses might have been kissing other than him.

Gynos specialize in female reproduction so they will likely be more knowledgable about any problems you have concerning birth control and your reproductive system.
Also, you don't have to worry about sitting in a waiting room full of sick people when all you need to see the doctor for is a refill on your bc pack. I see a gyno to get my pap and birth control pills. I see a GP for everything else.

Go to a gyno. Not all family doctors are aware of all the different types of birth control available.

I went to my family doctor. Call them up and ask, if the family doctor can't help you they'll tell you.

There is always the Nuva ring, the Patch, the shot (which I highly DO NOT recommend!), the IUD, etc. As well as condoms.
