If you Mapquest from Sylmar to San Luis Obispo, use those directions (I-5 to CA-126 toward Ventura to Hwy 101 North), then in San Luis Obispo, get off at the Hwy 1 North - Morro Bay/Hearst Castle exit, thats Hwy 1. Take Hwy 1 all the way up to SF. Its a beautiful drive that takes you through Big Sur, Monterey, Carmel, and Santa Cruz.

Please find #101 from Sylmar for a beautiful scenic drive to the Bay Area, and Enjoy! I have traveled this road for many years and never tire of the trip. Folks take #5 for speed, and I will never understand why.

After Gilroy (just below San Jose) then take #85, to #280 for #280 is exquisite thru the mountain range and Stanford area. It also takes you down 19th Avenue and thru the Presidio to go over the Golden Gate Bridge.

You could cut off in the Daly City area (just prior to entering San Francisco) and from #280 head towards downtown if you wish. Still a much better way and less heavy traffic than #101 into the city.
