I think changing the water is one of the best parts about keeping fish. It just lets you know that you really are one of the only things keeping these fish alive and lets you have the sense responsibility. I don't count down the days, but it does bother me when people complain about having to do water changes. If you don't want to clean up after them, don't get pets...

I keep track of the days, but usually it's set. I have several different tank sizes and populations. My main tank requires me to attend to that twice a week, and I've converted and rearranged my two smaller tanks, from a show tank for small species, to hospital, to now nurseries as I've had 2 species spawn. Nursery tanks are a pain to keep up as figuring just the right amount of food takes time to really know the proper amount. In my main tank, it's very time consuming when I do the cleaning change. The mid week is to keep the condioner levels at the range I want, and the weekend change is more cleaning. I will do a full 50% change on my 180 on the weekend, and at that time, I take all the decorations and make new formations out of it. I've got about 25 cichlids on the bottom level, mostly of the Mbuna family. In order to make sure everyone is not getting left out for space and homes, I change things up every weekend, and it's been doing wonders.
It's alot of work to move all that stuff around, and becomming more and more time consuming, but it balances out when you are done and can watch the fruits of your labor with full enjoyment.

Its not wierd at all. they are a pain, but nothing is more rewarding than changing a fishes water. you can honestly see they are happy when you have done it. It can be hard work, but it has good results.

Water changes are a cool thing when you have a system of pumps & hoses. My fishroom is behind the family room, watching football & changing water on the weekend is the best. I change out about 400 gallons weekly.

When I had fish, I loved changing the water, because I rearranged things for the fish all the time. I put different castles and rock formations, etc. I found it fun to watch them find their way through the new mazes and find new places to hide. I also love it when the water is sooooo clear.
Not weird...

i work at a petstore, and i actually look forward to doing my water changes! (i actually get cranky if my boss tries to make me do something else those days) i find it to be the most relaxing thing i do at work. although i have it a bit easy with my pythons conected to my water system. i like to do water changes, and scrub algea, and usually i rearrange my tanks at this point (sometimes with new decor). i think it gets you a little more intuned with your fish, and i think its very peaceful.

It is good you feel that way. My fish when I owned them were the healthiest that could be.
