for the requirements, do they expect high marks/GPAs/SAT scores?

or do they judge you mostly on your performance?

if one has a fairly low/average GPA but excels in their instrument, is there a high chance they'll be accepted?

If you are exceptionally talented, there is a possibility that they may make some concessions on academics, but they certainly won't ignore their standards completely. Keep in mind that in college you will be taking many classes which have nothing to do with your instrument or even music, and they won't admit you unless they are fairly certain that you can handle it. Also, in many cases, auditions don't occur until after you have been admitted, so unless you are well known, they may not be able to judge the quality of your performance.

You need to have reasonable scores and a decent performance. Too little of one or the other will hurt your chances. I made it years ago with a 1200 and a slammin vocal audition. My GPA was c+. Average student. GREAT standardized test taker. :)
