The Russia of today is not the USSR, but many Americans still hate it. Doing things like patronising Putin and installing a "missile shield" on Russia's border are extremely stupid.
Russia will turn East, where they can sell all their oil and gas and be treated politely. It is Europe which will suffer, but America doesn't care about that.

There is still a cold war mentality in the Bush administration
which places emphasis on the old cold war doctrine of being superior to any other power in terms of military hardware especially missiles and nuclear capability. This is particularly pushed by the Pentagon which has always been a bigger player in foreign policy decision making since Bush came to power - the sidelining of Colin Powell by Rumsfeld in the run up to the Iraq war and now the sidelining of Condy Rice by Dick Cheney on Iraq and Iran are cases in point.
The never- ending propaganda about the war on terror has muffled the Administration's retreat from detente and co-operation with Russia. Putin is understandably aggrieved.

Worse than all the things people say about bush, is the way everyone on this planet feels that they are an expert in all things -- war, global commerce, defense. Bush himself did not decide to put a missile sheild there, our generals did. They know much more about our defense needs than you do. do you think that they did not foresee and consider that russia would not like it? Or are YOU just SOOO clever, and our generals are not.

Because Bush's "America"- doesn't know what it's doing- & the American PEOPLE are just NOW coming to THAT realization... -Which is WHY they're getting ready to "overhaul" the Govenment in next year's Election... :(
