The Russia of today is not the USSR, but many Americans still hate it. Doing things like patronising Putin and installing a "missile shield" on Russia's border are extremely stupid.
Russia will turn East, where they can sell all their oil and gas and be treated politely. It is Europe which will suffer, but America doesn't care about that.

The average American sadly has no interest and very little knowledge of the rest of the world. We've had people writing in to Answers suggesting that if the Russians get too 'uppity' just nuke them!. Have these individuals any idea of the size of the Russian nuclear arsenal?. Putin is one smart man and like most Russians is determined to keep Russia as a great power which of course she still is. Bush and his advisers have little idea of how to deal with President Putin so think antagonising the Russians is the way to go.
'leowin 19' study political history a bit more, Russia and China have mutual interests in the world so when push comes to shove will stand to-gether.

Americans don't hate all Russians. We hate Russians who want to bring back the USSR. We also don't like Russians who use natural resources as bargaining tools in order to price gauge.

I'll give you the missile shield isn't the brightest idea, but if only up to a dozen missile interceptors are installed (as is planned), then it should do nothing to the Russian military machine. If Russia has 1/10 of the ICBMs America does, then a dozen interceptors will do nothing. Russia has nothing to worry about from those interceptors.

Great Britain has already had tensions with Russia this year, and Russian Tupolev bombers have been intercepted multiple times in the North Sea by British and Norwegian fighters. Russia is rebuilding, but I honestly don't believe they're too much of a threat anymore. Russia's problem lies in Chechnya, not the US or Europe. The missle defense shield is merely a scare tactic or a show of force by the United States and the "new NATO". I doubt it has any significant purpose.

While it was USSR,it was a competitor for world domination. The left over Russia is a cat and not a Tiger.Russia cannot dominate world politics and its influence is limited to India and a few Asian countries. In future Asia will be dominated by China or India.USA has already realised the situation and started to make China and India as allies.Even countries like India has almost abandoned Russia and joined US camp.In the new world order Russia will not have much importance. The world politics will be dominated by an axis USA-China-Japan-India

The present regime in the White House cause all this tension in the world.
People like GWB are not the types that should even be in places of power.
George W Bush thinks he's above "The American Constitution" and "rules of law" , and that is very dangerous.

We Americans grew up on TV and dreams...Russia and China grew up on discipline, hardship and chess. The American masses have NO clue how screwed we are.
