We still haven't gotten any professional photos done and our baby is 5 mo old. We taken a million photos, but I want some nice photos to give out for christmas presents. Which would you recommend? Why? Thanks!

If you have the time, call some of them and see if they have any specials going on. Also, the store studios hire experienced photographers and or train them. And they use just as good of equipment as the private photographer. For baby portraits they are usually fine. Wait until your baby needs senior pictures then try the expensive private photographer.

My very favorite studio picture of my daughter was taken at a Sears studio, which means it can be done. But overall I've been more impressed with a more upscale private studio than a mass market studio. They'll schedule a much longer appointment for you at a private studio so you'll be less rushed and they'll take the time to get a great picture. And places like Sears have a formula for taking pictures (they HAVE to take a minimum of 6 pictures with at least 1 close up, 1 full body, etc, so even if you know that you LOVE picture number 1 they make you keep going until they get at least 6).

But babies don't really need some of the special touches that private studios offer. For example, a baby doesn't need wrinkles in their face smoothed or their skin tone evened out. And they can cost so much that you end up being more picky about who you give them out to whereas with a less expensive studio you can afford to overorder just in case you forgot someone.

If you have time you may want to start with a cheaper studio, if you get a picture you love then you've accomplished your goal at a great price. If you don't get the perfect picture you can try a private studio.

Just avoid going for pictures on a weekend when the studios are very crowded and they're more rushed. And be very cognizant of what time of day is best for your baby not to be hungry or tired. And a couple more tips: take the photo outfits separately to the studio and change into them there, once in the outfit put a bib on the baby to keep drool off the outfit and remove the bib right before the picture.

I recommend (I take semi professional photos and we also have studio photos done)...at 5 months they are VERY easy to photograph...Go to a sears, jcpenny, walmart...one of the fairly inexpensive places now. Save the More experienced as you will (more expensive and or private photographers) for later on when it is harder to get good pictures.
Hope this helps...
We got pictures with our first one.....birth, 3 mo, 6 mo (7 mo for a beautiful baby contest she won) 9 mo, 12 mo, 18 mo and 24 mo at studios and I did the rest of the shots!

I think it's funny people are getting thumbs down for suggesting you go to a cheaper studio. Pictures are pictures, I got my DD pics done at sears her newborn pics everyone loved and thought it was the picture that came in the frame. Sears, Penney's, target do just as good of a job as pricey studios, it's really what you prefer. In the end the pictures are just as good some people are just stuck up and think if it's more expensive it's better.

Photography studios inside Target, Walmart, etc can take great pictures if they have good photographers. You can also take a good photo of the baby in your preferred outfit and take them to a drug store where they can print up some christmas cards for you. They don't have to be perfect pictures, just ones that capture him at that age.

We went to JC Penny's for our sons first pictures and spent $500 b.c they turned out so nice! He was 6 weeks old though. I dont regret it though. I suggest going to a department store for the photos such as Sears or Penny's b/c we got soooo many pictures for the amount of money we spent. I know if we would have gone somewhere like the Picture People we would have spent the same amount and would have gotten half the pictures.

I had great pictures taken at JC Penney and Sears. They are all professionals. The places in the mall that specialize in photos do a great job too. Take a couple different outfits, favorite toys and go get some pictures taken.

I suggest you just go to walmart and get some cheap pictures done. Getting babies that young to sit correctly without falling over or slouching and to smile for the perfect shot is sooo hard. your better off getting cheap pictures taken and saving the more expensive ones for when she's around 3 or 4 and able to take direction better .

Truthfully I prefer my own pics because you always have natural lighting my son is 4 mths old and i've uploaded about 400 pics to my comp. when you take your own pics you can do almost anything you want use all the props you want pose them any way you want to and at no extra cost then once you have your pics crop them and fix them on your comp and just print them out walgreens charges .50 for 4 wallets whenever I have a pic I like but theres no special occassion I just want to give them out I get those or they 8x10 for 2.99 can't beat that

try a place like morrfew photos, they come out really nice and they usually have specials around the holidays. I wouldn't recommend the cheaper studios like the ones in Myer in places like that, the photos don't look nearly as good and our still over priced.
