Since you probably have a male females are often much more drab and usually, unattractive), it could either be constipation (which Bettas are quite prone to) or dropsy. Both will result in swelling of the abdomen, but dropsy is almost always fatal. Look at the fish's stomach, and examine the scales. If the scales are pointed outwards (like pinecones), it is probably dropsy. If the Betta is floating at the surface or staying at the bottom and does not have pineconed scales, it is probably constipation which is easily remedied by feeding it a split pea (a pea with the shell removed). Email me if you have any questions, and if possible, post more info and a picture of the Betta.

EDIT: When it sees another Betta, it will flare [push it's operculums (gill plates) outward, but this doesn't effect it's stomach area].

EDIT 2: Even if it was a female Betta, Bettas are egg layers, so they don't get pregnant. You would know if you had a female because the femaels sold in pet stores are often labeled separately and usually less attractive than the males.

EDIT 3: You NEED to look at their stomach scales. If they are pineconed, it's dropsy (which means almost certain death. you're only hope with dropsy is to keep the water PRISTINE). If there is no pineconing, it is constipation, which simply requires a split pea.

How much have you been feeding them? If there are no signs of sickness (lethargy, white spots on body, scales pointing outwards), it's probably constipation. Soak a frozen pea in warm water, remove the shell, cut or smoosh the pea into tiny pieces, and feed a few pieces to your fish. Then try fasting your betta for 24-48 hours so his system can clean out.

Sounds most like dropsy check the fins and bettas can NOT get pregnant to all the answers above they are not live bearing fish.

when they see another betta fish, it blows up, and gets excited and ready to fight. they shouldnt be in the same tank, or near each other where they can see each other.
