There are some things to remember about the basics of astrology.
1. The sun is only a foundation. Arguably the strongest part, but not always, and usually more not than it is, the most visible part. Psychologically, the sun represents your inner self.
2. Usually combined, it is the sun the moon and the rising who appear to give out the strongest influence. In my opinion the rising is still the strongest out of the three, because the rising shows which first impression people get from you - and first impressions usually last. Equally, the descendant shows which impression you get from the people around you.
You can find your rising only when you have a correct time of birth.
3. Although being the foundations of a chart, the sun is subject to the sign it is in, the house it is in (you can find the house where the sun is in when you have your exact time of birth, because it is the rising that helps divide a chart in houses), and the planets aspecting it - they give the sun part of their influence too; so if you are a capricorn with mercury conjunct to the sun, you will have a seemingly virgo/gemini influence. Etc... Also if your sun is in the 12th house, you don't show your sun, since the 12th house is the hidden house. It also acts as if the sun would be in Pisces, giving your "self" a bit of pisces along in the mix.
4. Personal planets (mercury, venus, mars) and the moon have a grave effect on your personality. If you have the sun in one sign, and all the others in different signs, chances are slim that you would be like your sun sign, because you're equally influenced by 4 other objects who influence you from another sign. The sun is in a minority, so it gets less influencing.
In your case, mercury is conjunct the sun, the moon is in pisces (and the moon is equally important to your chart - maybe even more so), venus is in aquarius (contrary to capricorn, you'll probably feel more at home stimulating your intellect and experimenting, and are more artistic and caring), mars in scorpio (a powerful and deadly plutonian energy), and that's not even the aspects between them and with outer planets.

My best friend has the same birthday as you. To an extent, although you're mainly in Capricorn, you're a bit Sagittarius-Capricorn cuspy. My best friend is dedicated, ambitious, and disciplined, like a Capricorn is. But she's zany, happy-go-lucky, bluntly honest, and fun-loving like a Sagittarius is! That could be it. Other than that, you must have another element really dominating your charts. I'm a Libra who acts totally like a Libra. But I find myself attracting a lot of Earth Signs. I blame it on my Capricorn ascendent and Virgo moon. Nothing is black and white in astrology. There's a lot to consider.

There is nothing that states that the Sun is the strongest part of the chart, infact we "become" the Sun, we are not automatically born with those attributes. The attributes of a sun sign are things that we learn through our journey through life. Further, the sun can be unconscious in a chart, depending on its placements and aspects and the elemental balance.

That's a misconception. Your Astrological "make-up" consists of 12 signs, 10 planets, 12 houses-interaction and relationships between all of them.
You could have stronger placements in another sign or element. You should look at seeing an astrologer.
And remember, it's a picture of what you came into this life with...your environment, the concept of free will, your beliefs and choices that you've made or make can change any of it.
