How much do you spend for strictly food items from the grocery food for an average month? I crunched the numbers and found that for just our husband and I we spend $400.00 a month on average. That seems rather high to me and wanted to find out how other households fair. This total does not include any type of eating out or take out. I appreciate you all sharing.

My hubby found out recently that he has pre diabetes which can be managed by a healty diet. Myself have joined in with him to eat a healthy diet for weight loss.
B4 we lived on beans, bologna, hamburger meat, cheap snack foods. We spent $75 a month for the 2 of us. Going healthy is expensive. Fresh/Frozen veggies, fruits, dairy, chicken, splenda/equal. I'm not gripeing though because consider the alternative. You end up paying your life's savings on doctors and hospital. Thank you all for your input.

I currently became a live in nanny, and I'm left $200 a week for any expenses incurred upon the childrens behalf.

For myself, a 9 year old girl, a 15 year old boy, and his friend that seems live here, I usually spend about $75 a week.

When I was on my own, I could live on $60 a month, but I was extremely cheap and poor. :)

I spend about $70 twice a week - which is close to $500 a month for two adults. But I am not the least bit judicious about what I buy. If I want it I buy it even if it is out of season (like certain fruits) and costly, I'll still buy it. So I'd say you are doing pretty good.

Stuff has gotten pretty expensive lately, too. Any products that come from cows - dairy, beef - have gone up due to corn prices. Higher transportation costs have caused inflation in food prices laterly, too.

If you budget properly the average we see in our personal finance classes is $125 per person in the family for everything that you could buy at a grocery store(tooth paste, soap, etc.). So in your case that would be 250. Your best bet to bring your spending down is to go to a cash envelope system. At the beginning of the month take out all the cash you need for groceries and keep it in an envelope. When going to get groceries take the envelope with you. No envelope no groceries. You will be amazed at the difference it makes in your spending.

Average $520 a month this year. But I eat well. No hamburger helper for me. Fresh fruit is expensive. Last week I spent .79 on 1 lemon for my veal piccata.

That number is probably about right. For me and my wife we spend about 325 per month, but we are also really thin people. (I weight 145 and my wife weighs 85) I eat 6 times per day and she eats about 3 or 4 times. We actually used to spend upwards of 500 per month when shopping at Bel-Air, but now we shop at a discount supermarket called Win-co and pay about 30% less there. We have to bag our own groceries there, but at least its cheaper. Food is very expensive and most people dont realize how much they spend on it. If you wanted to live on rice and tap water, you could probably get by with about 40 dollars per month on your food bill.

Depends on where you live, but $400 for food only seem pretty high for just two people, especially if that's only two meals per day.

I spend about $200 per month just for myself, but that includes paper products, laundry products, soap, medications, etc.
