Recently got a Silver lyretail molly, at the moment the only fish in the tank. I think its a female since it has that fan shaped anal fin. I was thinking of getting her a male to play with.. to be exact, I was thinking of a sailfin (black or silver) Now my question is.. with sailfin mollies how would i go about picking a male? And which do you suggest I get Black or Silver?? (or should i get the orange??)

T.Y in advance for answers

They are very easy to sex actually
The male has a gonopodium, which is the long thin pointed fin on the bottom
whereas the female has 2 round fins in it's place
the following article has pics on how to sex them

Hope that helps
Good luck

The same way as a Lyretail. Look for the long shaped fin.

If you get a male, I would suggest getting another female as well. Mollies tend to do best with more females than males.

I have a silver male, 2 creamscicle (orange) females, a silver female, a dalmatian female and a black female.

The fry from the 2 silvers tend to be very difficult to see, and for some reason this seems to be a disadvantage as for whatever reason most dont survive (I havent figured out why yet). The silver and the creamscicles make very pretty babies, that range anywhere in color from pale yellow to bright orange. And the silver and the dalmatian or the black usually make solid black or dalmatian fry, which are very cute.
I personally would get a silver male and another female, but a creamscicle.

When large enough, the male will have an anal fin (Gonopodium) which is elongated and used to fertilize. females. Looks like a little stick when not pulled up against the body.

sailfin mollies are the same way. they are easy to sex as they dont have long fins.

the males have a gonopudigum and females have the fan.

They are just like regular mollies when it come to sexing.

There is a difference from lyer tails and sailfins... so dont get them mixed up. Sailfin mollies do not have the long finnage that lyer tails have.

The males have a sharper anal fin - pointy rather than fanned. Pick the colour when you get there, you may prefer one particular fish over the others.
