And if so,.....Is cold turkey the best way to disengage or would you suggest a 12 step program?

It's kinda addictive, but it was a very pleasant addiction for me. My addiction-- and the joy that went with it-- were both dampened considerably when a "clever" answer I gave-- unintentionally really rude in retrospect-- really hurt the questioner's feelings. My wife hit the nail on the head: "John, sometimes you're too smart for your own good."

I haven't seen that person on here since, and the encounter diminished my participation too, causing me to start socializing more and internetting less-- not a bad result, but I prefer the "addiction" to the way I accidentally became kind of cured.

I don't know how to apply a 12-point program to this "addiction", but don't quit unless it's cutting too much into real life and the people you're really close to. Hope the pleasure and the joy I once felt giving answers and asking questions here comes back. And thanks for asking. Hope the contact I lost through egotism and rudeness comes back.

Oh, Silva!

I live in Utah, and currently I am near the end of a three-week visit to Egypt to see my Dad. I could be out doing stuff, or shopping for treasures to take home, or just taking in the sun (I am sure tan!), but what am I doing? I am snatching a bit of illicit Y!A love, and answering a question. If that isn't addiction, I don't know what is.

I thought I would be able to go cold turkey, as it is such a short period of time. I have to tell you that while visiting Luxor, in Upper Egypt, I seriously dabbled with the idea of knocking over an old man who was in a Wi-Fi area and hiding him under the table so I could use his laptop and indulge my habit.

The problem, as I see it, is that cold turkey doesn't work. A 12-step program won't work, either. Why? Because no matter who your Higher Power is, chances are good He/She/It is addicted to Y!A as well. Turn things over to your Higher Power, and you'll just be back where you started.

So come, Sister, and join me gladly and happily in Y!A junkie land. And keep your chin up; it's cheap, and it's legal. That's more than you can say for most nasty habits.

Salaam!

12 Step Program or Rehab

It is definitely addicting. But, if most peoples' answers are interesting, valuable and fun, then it's a good addiction, don't you think?

The thing we have to keep in mind is that YA is for learning, enjoyment and FUN. The points don't mean anything! It's only when someone uses YA as a forum to make others feel bad in some way that it can be a drag.

It's the majority of the people on here that are smart, talented, profound, hilarious, etc. that makes me want to keep coming back.

Maybe I would do something more mundane like watch television if the they weren't so interesting.....

12 step yes, and perhaps Yahoo P & S Anonymous Meetings held weekly. An addict will need a support system, a mentor or a coach. He needs some one to call upon in the middle of the night when he wakes up in a cold sweat from P and S. withdraw symptoms.

It may require more intense treatment and the user may need to be sent to rehab

Definately the 12 step program. But you already past the first step which is getting out of the state of denial. So I congradulate you on that but now you must move on to the second step which is not saving your username on Y!A as cookies. Therefore you have to go through the extra step of actually typing in your username and password rather then it already being done for you. Once you complete this get back to me and I will be your personal coach on how to cease your addiction to Y!A.

YES!!!! Please don't quit.

I really enjoy it when you ask us to create a poem or something, using certain objects etc.
I find this site can be used intelligently and I can often learn a lot.
Perhaps it has been a success for Yahoo, due to society becoming no longer a community.
Plus we are from all over the world, so perhaps if we ask sensible questions, and give sensible answers, we may be able to make a little difference in this crazy world!
I am not from the U.K. but the Southern Hemisphere, so it's good to hear what is happening on all sides of the world.

Yep, very much so. I just went cold turkey for 3 days. (longest 3 days of my life) So, I have promised myself that I would spend no more than 2 hours a day in YA and get back to doing more of my research when I home alone during the day.

No. As I've said before, I can quit whenever I want. Like now. See, I was off for 10 seconds just then. I don't need to be here. It was easy to be off during those 10 seconds. I just choose to be here. People need me to be here, but I don't need to be here. Yes sir, I am not addicted to this place. I just want to be here. I am not, I repeat, AM NOT, addicted and anyone who thinks so is wrong. I'm going to quite for 30 seconds this time.. really...watch..here I go.

Ah, that was just fine. I think those people who are addicted are just a bunch of losers. I am glad I am not one of them and can quit so easily all the time. OK, have to go answer some other question now..
