Have to disagree with Tom again.
Run premium, no less than 91 octane. Don't switch back.
Carbon buildup is hardly a possibility in a new cycle.
Newer ('07-'08) bikes run leaner than older ones.
Lean mixtures result in pre-ignition (ping).
If you have NOT had any mods done, consult the dealer if the premium gas does not make it go away.
If you have made changes to intake, exhaust, or both then you will need to make adjustments to your fuel flow as well.

Have you put on a SE anything? Do you have an engine check light come on? Wait the bike is still under warranty. Take it to a dealer and have them check it out. Also where is the noise coming from? Top of the engine, the bottom, the front of the bike, the back? You should get asked all these questions before getting an answer.

i get pinging in my sportster if i dont run at least the +. it prefers premium tho. try a tank of + or premium first. if that dont do it, it might need to be enrichened a bit. epa regs have made the factory turn the maps to a ridiculously lean setting. pull the plugs. if they're paper white, it should be richened up some.

Like they said, Premium Fuel only, "read" the plugs and fatten up the fuel /air ratio if needed. Lastly , retard the timing a degree if needed.
You also failed to say how many miles you have, be aware , motors run a bit hotter and noisier ,while the parts are getting to know each other.

first you have to understand what causes the pinging sound.
pinging is caused by heavy carbon deposits that build up and stick to the inside of the head, or the valves, this carbon gets red hot and that pre-ignites the fuel mixture before the spark plug fires.
use a super unleaded fuel, 93 octane, and run the piss outta it, then switch back to regular unleaded 87 octane, and don't be afraid to run ur bike hard and hot, run it in lower gears and get those rpm's up.

Check the spark plug gaps, make sure they're set to spec (I've never had a mechanic do that correctly).
Run a tank of premium gasoline.

Try a higher octane. If that don't work you have an advanced timing problem which would indicate the ecm is not doing it's job. probably a faulty sensor or a lean fuel condition.
