what a complex question! Manhattan is so diverse to begin with so everyones definition of a decent neighborhood is different and the way manhattan is you could pay 5,000 a month for a 1 Bedroom in the village and walk literally 1 block and pay 1,200? So to answer your question, a nice apt within close distance to a college would range from $3,200-4,800. I would suggest craigslist, or apartments.com. Dont go with a broker because they will charge a fee usually the first months rent, but the way the market is u could also find a broker who wont charge u but the landlord. Goodluck!

Mostly I'd say it's like J.P.Morgan said about the cost of his boat--"If you have to ask, you can't afford it." I'd suggest you try Sunnyside or Woodside in Queens. They are a 10-15 minte subway ride into Manhattan and the rents are less expensive. Good luck.
