Yes, I have been stopped in traffic when hot-rodders closed down a busy city street to have a drag race. No one would dare ask them to move along as they tend tend to be armed with baseball bats and boken and a 100 or more can gather in a few minutes by text messaging each other. They probably wouldn't attack the average citizen, but they would have no qualms about vandalizing your car if you were impatient. In any case the race did not take long and they all took off before a single cop showed up. This was all in Sendai where hot-rodders and bozozuku are a real menace. The cops chase them in their own Mitsubishi GTO pursuit cars but that just seems to add to the racket. Sometimes the riot cops come out but they are too slow moving to do much. I don't think the same think would happen in the fashionable areas of Tokyo like in the film. The only solace the average citizen can have is when one of those assholes dies in a fiery wreck and gory photos get put up at the highway rest stop.

never seen it or heard of it but the motorcycle guys are always ripping up the highway late at night.
I wouldn't doubt that street racing does become an event because of the movie and the recent japanese movie. It's a case of life imitating art

Much of what you saw was hollywood bullcrap like most other things you see in hollywood films.
In all my time I've never seen them racing around like crazy like portrayed in the movie.
NOW, I have heard those dumb motorcycle guys always roaring around at 3am and the police always trying to go after them, but thats about it.

That movie is just a fantasy. Kids are not racing around in $200,000 racing cars. Most do not speak English. There's not alot of white / black kids running around and actting crazy either. Many of the streets of Tokyo are too small for racing. And BTW, much of that movie was filmed in Los Angeles...

Never have, but I live in rural Japan closer to Osaka. However, I understand that it's somewhat secretive practice and you have to "know somebody" to be able to catch the action.
