The main factors that limit the size of the cell are:
1. Diffusion: The rate of diffusion is too slow to supply materials to the interior of a large cell ... or to remove materials from the interior of a large cell.
2. DNA: DNA cannot be copied quickly enough to handle the protein synthesis needs of a cell that is too large.
3. Surface area to volume ratio: a cell that is too large in volume does not have enough surface area (not enough plasma membrane) to handle all the materials that must enter and leave a cell. It's like having too many people in a building that doesn't have enough doors. People will always be waiting to get in or to get out.

Cells can overcome this size limitation by:
1. Dividing to keep cells small.
2. Being long and thin so the interior of a cell is never very far away from the plasma membrane. Think of nerve cells.

The larger the cell, the less the surface area to volume ratio. This limits the ability of the cell to get nutrients and get rid of wastes

They overcome that limitation by either covering their surface with cillia or splitting into multiple cells.

switchblades are illegal in California. The pocket knifes with folding blade are legal and do not have limit in size by state, but may be prohibited by city or school, college, or other organization. Edited: @ John S, I don't know what you did 35 years as criminal defense attorney. As one, you may know that State government revising the laws every year. If you noted that Wikipedia article is from year 2005. My link is from 2012. How the legal length of knife may be limited to 2" in California, if they allow in LAX to bring on the plane knifes with blade 2.5". Are they operating out of law?
