The golden age of the cowboy is past. That was a time when cattle lived on the open range, ate the grass and shrubs, and were driven to the railryard on horseback, to be shipped to the butchering plants.
Today, cattle for the most part are raised on feed lots....big factory buildings where they spend their lives. They do not feed on the open range.
The closest thing you have to a cowboy nowadys is a rodeo star...a bronco buster, bull rider. The last I heard, cowboys who worked on ranches used pickup trucks.
There might be a few cowboys though. A cowboy is like a shepherd....his job is to drive the cattle, the way a shepherd drives sheep.

Heck yes. I live in Texas. There's still plenty of cowboys around that work cattle. Where do you think beef comes from? I'm from South Texas, and I went to school with a lot of ranchers' children. It's an interesting life they lead from burning cactus so the cows can eat it during dry spells, feeding, branding, going to cattle auctions, etc. Yes, this stuff still goes on.

Yes. Someone has to do the work on the ranches and tend the livestock. In some areas they still use horses but a four wheel drive vehicle does a lot more of the work now.
