Betta are territorial fish. In the wild, male betta have defined territories. If another male ventures into that territory then "fighting" occurs. You can keep male betta together if your tank is large enough and if you provide ample "hiding" spots.

I have a 75 gallon tank that is very heavily planted. There are 5 male betta and 9 females living together in the tank and I've never lost a fish. Occasionally, a male will get a little too close to another male's territory. The males present to each other and then go back to their own turf.

So, if you want to keep males together, start with at least a 10 gallon tank planted heavily. I'd recommend a divider to begin and plant the tank so the males can't see each other.. The males will define their turf after a few weeks. You can then remove the divider. If the males happen to get through the planted "fence", they'll typically "escape" back to their own side of the tank.

Good Luck!

lady Betta's could be housed contained in a similar tank if: a million)The tank is sufficiently super and a pair of)There are adequate lady Betta's that the aggression is dispensed calmly by using out the gang (additionally, it relies upon on the guy character of the fish)

You can't train fish. Their minds are not complex enough.

Bettas do fight in the wild, but they do not fight to the death because one of them (the weaker one) is always able to flee from the fight. They live in huge rice paddies where there is plenty of space to run away.

In a tank, of course, there is no room to run away and that's why you end up with badly injured or dead bettas. Two or three male bettas can coexist in a large enough tank, probably about 50 gallons minimum in my opinion. They will fight occasionally when they meet each other but at least the tank will be large enough for them to swim away and hide.

In fact, bettas are actually not built to kill, only to fight. The reason why one betta dies during a fight is usually not because the other betta actually kills it, but because it keeps trying to flee and dies of exhaustion; or because its injuries cause it to become sick (infection, etc) and they die a few days after the fight.

I honestly don't think that you could, but there might be a way. Sorry I'm unable to help with this, since I only know that the females can get along with one another. Not the males . . .

Let's put it into perspective. In the wild they don't have such limited space which is why they may not fight. They're fighting over territory in the tank.

Give it a try anyway. Perhaps they will just flair their fins at each other and in the end respect one another's space.

You can't "train" them. They do fight in the wild, but in the wild, they live in HUGE rice paddies that have more than adequate places to hide... In a small aquarium, the lesser Betta will get backed into a corner and attacked... In a tank that is 30 gallons or more, if it is adequately planted, you could easily keep 2-3 male Bettas together...

I have had 2 in a 20L with no problem. Both just more or less stayed in their won corner. I didn't know there were 2 in there. My son, when in high school, thought it would be fun to watch them fight. He was disappointed.
