"The Man Without A Country" by Edward Everett Hale. It's a short story.

Supposedly, the main character was convicted of treason against the United States. He shouts back "I wish I may never hear of the United States again!" So his sentence is to live at sea on US Navy vessels, and no one is to discuss anything happening in the US with him.

It's fiction, but interesting.
