Does anyone remember the infamous shoe-banging incident by Kruschev at the United Nations supposedly in response to the UN rep from the Philippines?

I know the event is like ancient history but I just can't remember
the details.

It happened during the early 60's during the Kennedy administration. The incident took place in New York City where Khrushchev was addressing the United Nations General Assembly.

In an effort to drive home a point, he took off his shoe and used it as a gavel. Hitting the lectern, he shouted, "Мy vas pokhoronim!" which means. "We will bury you!"

The phrase was like the shot heard 'round the world. It was repeated in every paper, every newscast, every news magazine, etc. Film of the incident is still around. It is regarded as one of the pivotal points during the Cold War.

The phrase itself could be interpreted several ways. Later in life, Kruschev talked about the incident, saying that he "got in trouble for saying, 'We will bury you'. He added, "Of course, we will not bury you with a shovel. Your own working class will bury you".

But that was not how the American public interpreted his words.

It was during the cold war. The majority of the Americans took the phrase as a threat.

They felt that the Russian leader was saying, in effect, "We will kill you, then bury you."

Gato Persa had a good description of what happened. But, my favorite part of the story was after Nikita Kruschev stopped banging his shoe and shouting those words. The British Ambassador spoke up and threw a large wet blanket on Comrade Kruschev's moment:
"Her Majesty's Ambassador respectfully requests consecutive translation of the last speaker's remarks.". How does one put a banging shoe into words? LOL!
