One preventative to another huge bill: use a broomstick to unjam the disposer next time. Make sure it;s off! Also, there is a rest button on the bottom or lower side. And if the matchstick is jamming the disp, it's defective and should be replaced under warranty! Talk nicely to your landlord, and explain that a matchstick would not cause a jam if the thing was new, and was a decent one. He should not expect you to pay for the repair if the machine is worth a damned.

Bad call on the part of the landlord, no matter what the bill stated. If you have a garbage disposal that will jam up with just a match stick, look forward to more problems because it isn't working right. Make sure you document the date, time that these problems take place, you'll need that information when you go after the landlord for a new disposal because of what is happening with the old one. Good Luck

A moving disposer can grind up most anything. A stopped disposer with a good sized matchstick stuck between the rotor and body might not have enough startup power to break the stick. I have seen some pretty flimsy disposals out there, and since a disposal does not make profits, I bet the landlord went as cheap as possible.

I doubt that one matchstick can jam a garbage disposal since it can grind bones up. Bones would be tougher than a matchstick.
