The ancient romans put animals(i.e. lions or the like) captured from africa into the colosseum arena to battle gladiators.
Bull fighting happened in Italy as well, maybe that influenced the spaniards later in time to fight bulls, and then mexico and so forth.

Bull jumping---a form of bull fighting without killing was praticed by the Minoans of Crete....both men and women.

In Mexico, many years ago, a form of bull fighting with grizzly bears was also shown from time to time....there are stories of the men that had to go out and lasso a grizzly bear from horseback for these events. Pretty wild and dangerous.
